Beckman likes run in semis for Schumacher Electric, but Arizona Nationals loss still like 'punch in the gut'

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 19, 2012) - Jack Beckman was denied his third straight NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series title at Firebird International Raceway, but the Schumacher Electric Corp. driver was not dismayed.

"You can't throw a tantrum," he said after losing in the semifinals to event runner-up Mike Neff. "Some people think losing doesn't bother me because I don't do that but losing feels like a punch in the gut."

Beckman wasn't displeased with his run of 4.129 seconds at 301.60 mph. He explains it was just unfortunate he was paired against Neff, who ran a 4.099 (306.74) that was the best of the semifinals.

"We stepped it up to run a 4.12 and in those hot conditions it was a great run," he said of crew chief Rahn Tobler's setup. "The only problem was that it was against (Neff's) 4.09 that was a fantastic run.

"We would have outrun either of the other cars in the semis. It's not one of those deals that it's not who you race but when you race them.

"Yeah, that's frustrating but it's racing. We made consistent, quick runs and that's what will get you a ton of round wins and that's what will get us some trophies this year."
