Schumacher (Top Fuel), Worsham (Funny Car) Score Victories for Team Valvoline in Bristol
BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 17, 2009) -- Valvoline ace Tony Schumacher moved back into first place after claiming his third win of the season Sunday at Bristol Dragway. It was also his 59th career win.
Schumacher defeated Doug Kalitta in the final round with a 3.857-second run at 310.91 miles hour. Kalitta trailed with a 3.879 at 303.43.
"To be back in the points lead is outstanding," said Schumacher. "We started this year with everyone telling us we'd probably never win another race. To be sitting here now with three wins in the first eight races is very satisfying, I'm not gonna lie. Our team is working so well right now. I don't think there's a guy on this team that would rather be somewhere else. It's a group that wants to get up in the morning and go racing."
The double-win NHRA Valvoline weekend included a Funny Car victory by Del Worsham, who captured his second consecutive victory and 24th of his career. He beat Tony Pedregon in the finals with a run of 4.075 at 304.67 to Pedregon's 4.152 at 293.22
Worsham, who is second in Funny Car points, closed the gap with series leader and Valvoline driver Ron Capps, who lost in the second round.
