Edwards Scores Victory for Team Valvoline in Montreal's Nationwide Series Road Race
MONTREAL (Aug. 30, 2009) -- Team Valvoline driver Carl Edwards passed Marcos Ambrose on the final corner of the final lap to win Sunday's NASCAR Nationwide Series road race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The .393-second margin of victory at the 15-turn, 2.71-mile Canadian circuit was the third Nationwide Series win of the season for Edwards and his first career NASCAR win on a road course.
"I just gave it everything I had on that last lap," said Edwards, "Marcos just made that one mistake through the curves at the end and gave me the chance to get by. It was pretty wild."
The result also lifted Edwards' season Nationwide totals to 17 top-fives and 20 top-10s in 25 starts. He is second in the Nationwide driver standings, 192 points behind Kyle Busch.
NASCAR red-flagged the event on Lap 61 of 76 for wet weather, allowing teams to switch to rain tires.
Following Edwards and Ambrose to the checkered flag were: Andrew Ranger (third), Jacques Villeneuve (fourth) and Brad Keselowksi (fifth).
In Friday night's Camping World Truck race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., Valvoline driver Colin Braun finished third. The race winner was Kyle Busch. Rounding out the top five in order were: Todd Bodine, Braun, Rick Crawford and Johnny Sauter.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the NHRA Full Throttle Series each had the weekend off. Competition in both series resumes this weekend -- Sunday night for the Sprint Cup Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Monday (Labor Day) for the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.
