Overview
The Environmental Protection Agency requires all 2010 on-highway diesel engines to meet new Nox (Nitrogen Oxide) emission standards. In order to meet these lower standards, most engine manufacturers are using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment. These systems mix Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) with Exhaust gas and use a catalytic converter to change the NOx emissions into Nitrogen and Water.
How To Use
Each SCR equipped vehicle will carry DEF in a separate storage tank. The dosing control unit sprays a fine mist of DEF into the exhaust stream and it is consumed at an appreoximate rate of 2% to diesel fuel (1 gallon of DEF to 50 gallons of Diesel). If a vehicle achieves 6 miles per gallon of diesel fuel, it will achieve approvimately 300 miles per gallon of DEF.
