| The Ashland Valvoline New Product Development Laboratory |
| Lexington, Kentucky |
"Tested on the track. Trusted on the road".
This special facility, located on the Valvoline World Headquarters campus, was opened in 1998. Its primary function is research. It is here where Valvoline technicians develop new lubricants, coolants, appearance products and automotive chemicals for its Valvoline, Zerex, Eagle One, SynPower and MaxLife brands.
The Lexington lab is also where the longtime racing sponsor and team owner formulates and blends a number of racing oils, racing coolant, and other fluids such as brake fluids and shock absorber oils for racing. A special blend kettle on the first floor is where Valvoline technicians prepare all of the oils for Ray Evernham's NASCAR teams, for example. But the lab also provides a high performance edge to racers and race engine builders in everything from NHRA to motorcycles to karts.
Longtime racing icon Valvoline has the credibility to claim that it not only is on the race car, but in the race car.
It is in this laboratory that Valvoline technicians developed MaxLife Motor Oil for high mileage vehicles after observing consistent high mileage issues included seal leaking, oil consumption and deposits. This follows Valvoline's development of the first blend of conventional and synthetic oils (DuraBlend) and, of course, the best-selling racing motor oil of all time.
Since the brand's earliest days in the 19th Century Valvoline has followed the philosophy set by its founder, Dr. John Ellis. "Quality," he said, "is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort and skillful execution."
To that end, the Ashland Valvoline New Product Development Laboratory is a scene of constant checking and re-checking, of rigorous procedures and "what if?" thinking. While others might formulate their products to meet minimum specifications, Valvoline's goal is ensuring that its quality products and production practices exceed customer expectations.
