Our use of environmental resources . . .

Our values, that define who we are, include our commitment to responsibility, sustainability and transparency. We focus on achieving safe and health-conscious work environments, require compliance and embrace environmental stewardship. As we operate, we assess our impact on customers, communities and society when making decisions.

We are taking actions to continuously reduce our environmental impact. Building on the significant reductions already achieved, our North American goals for Valvoline in fiscal 2010 include reducing our waste generation by 1 percent, water consumption by 1 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 5 percent.

To put these into perspective, in the area of waste, last fiscal year Valvoline's blending and packaging facilities recycled 2,194,000 pounds of material - nearly twice the volume of the 1,230,000 pounds of waste we generated. Meeting our goal of a further 1 percent reduction in waste generation would cut our total by an additional 12,300 pounds.

Based upon our use of just under 28 million gallons of water annually at Valvoline's wholly owned plants, manufacturing operations for Car Brite, administration buildings and labs, our water use reduction target of 1 percent equates to using 280-thousand fewer gallons.

We measure Valvoline's North American greenhouse gas emissions (in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents) from our wholly owned plants, manufacturing operations for Car Brite, administration buildings, labs and company fleet. Our monthly baseline emissions averaged 38,500 tons of carbon dioxide between July 2008 and July 2009. We are seeking a 5-percent reduction by the end of our fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2010.

In addition, we have begun to collect global data and will extend our goals to encompass worldwide operations in the near future.
