If you're an oil additive manufacturer looking for evidence to support performance claims, a chemical engineer looking for certified testing of a new coolant formula, or an oil manufacturer looking for field-test fleet data, you've found the right place.
Ashland Laboratories has been conducting vehicle and engine tests for almost half a century, performing evaluations on engine oils, additives, coolants and automotive chemicals. And we are certified by the American Chemical Council's laboratory code of practice program. Customer results are kept in strict confidence by "firewall" security measures.

Dedicated To The Transportation Industries
Unlike other test labs, Ashland is devoted solely to the quantifiable and verifiable mechanical testing of automotive and trucking industry chemicals, using stationary engine tests and fleet test programs. CRC-based rating techniques for post-test components ensure accuracy.

ASTM Stationary Engine Testing
Our lab is equipped to conduct the following ASTM engine test methods:

Chassis Dynamometer Testing - Mileage Accumulator
Valvoline offers paired vehicle dynamometer capabilities. State-of-the-art mileage accumulations dynamometers (MADs) provide continuous vehicle operation with speeds up to 100 MPH. The MADs are computer controlled, using high-speed data acquisition to monitor and record established conditions.

The MADs can accommodate most front drive and rear drive light-duty vehicles. Virtually any transient or steady-state driving cycle can be accurately reproduced in this facility. Constant speed electric motors are coupled with clutches to provide transient motoring capability and inertia simulation. A 100-hp power absorption dynamometer provides speed control, load control, and braking.

Both diesel and gasoline fueled vehicles are be operated for extended periods. Vehicles are fueled via underground 1000-gallon storage tanks.

High Performance Motorsports Test Cell
The MotorSports Test Cell is designed to provide performance testing of engine oils, using engines built for racing applications. Testing sequence is performed where a baseline test is run immediately before and after the candidate, with flushes in between the oils to remove residual oils. Two different performance engines are currently available.

In-Vehicle Testing
Because stationary tests can only simulate in-vehicle performance, we also conduct tests on dynamometers and in-fleet operations.
Ashland Laboratories has long-standing relationships with state and county police, sheriffs' patrols, cross-country and municipal fleet operations throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and South America. We even test for high-performance motorsport teams. To date, we have conducted over 13 million test miles in police service, 3 million test miles through the Rocky Mountains and 70 million test miles of diesel engine oil testing in heavy-duty fleets.

Put Us To The Test
Because we've been in this testing business so long, we are highly efficient and cost-effective, both in the lab and in the field.
