                    Vehicle Cover Folding and Care

Protect your cover, protect your ride

                    Created by Mike Magda

The advantages of a car cover are obvious, especially to those who can't garage their vehicle, or the parking lot at work is without shade or any defense against bombardier bird droppings. A car cover will protect a vehicle's finish from the elements, shield the interior from UV radiation and even deter theft of personal property.

Proper care of a car cover is not always obvious, however. Besides keeping a car cover clean, the most important consideration is following a consistent removal/installation routine that prevents scratches on the paint finish. This practice is especially important if your cover is on and off the vehicle on a daily basis.

The Photo Gallery shows a preferred method of folding and removing a car cover. We've also included some general tips on selecting and using car covers.

                    Tips

TIP 1: Always purchase a car cover that is custom fitted to your year and make of vehicle. Universal covers that don't fit tight can flap in the wind and damage the paint finish.

TIP 2: Be careful when purchasing a waterproof cover. While these covers can protect a vehicle from rain, it can also trap water and condensation. Permanent water spots or unsightly mildew can result.

TIP 3: Never install a cover over a hot vehicle, and never position a cover near hot exhaust outlets.

TIP 4: Never fold a wet cover and let it sit. Always dry it according to manufacturer's directions before folding.

TIP 5: Some cars and trucks have sharp edges on the bumpers or rocker trim. It might be wise to reinforce the fabric on the inside of those areas to avoid tears, and always take care when removing the cover from around sharp edges.

TIP 6: Dirt is the enemy of car covers. Store covers in plastic bags when not in use.

TIP 7: Not all covers come with a provision for a radio antenna, so you may have to cut a hole in the proper position.

TIP 8: Always use the locking devise supplied with quality car covers. Locking straps will deter theft and help keep the cover tight to avoid wind flapping.
